    Default private server

    hi,

please be gentle with me, this is my 1st post.
i am looking to move my website hosting from the host it is with to a new one and I need a private server. the reason for this is because the web site hosting was set up by someone who cant look after it for me anymore and so i need to take it over and setup on a private server. the person who set it up did it on his own private server so i have had nothing to do with the whole set up of it.
i want to be able to look after the web site hosting myself rather than rely on someone else to do everything for me. as you may have guessed by now, im not so good with all the technical side of things of a private server

anyway, my website hosting is not huge, it has several pages, but it does have a forum (phpbb) that i would like to take with me as it is all set up and has posts that i don't want to lose. i also own the domain name.

what i want to know is can i transfer my website hosting to eukhost without too many complications and can i move my forum as it is or would i have to start all over again on a private server?
i dont mind so much redoing the website hosting, as i have all the info saved and its easy enough to put it onto a new site(says she who is not that brill on computers!), but i do want to try and keep the forum as it is. maybe it might be better for me to redo the website hosting anyway so can learn how to do it?
i need something that is easy for a beginner to do and look after.

does anyone understand what i have written? if anyone out there can offer me any advice then i would be very grateful. would i be able to run the phpbb forum on the bronze package or do I need to consider a private server? im sorry to sound so untechnical.

many thanks in advance for any help.

Do you have access to the Admin of the CPanel or the forum itself ? If so you can backup the database and just install here on our private servers. You can also do a full backup via CPanel of your website hosting is databases and bring them over. It shouldn't be a problem if you have access to these on your private server.

Transfer procedure for .com domains and .co.uk domains is completely different, so I would like to know what type of domain you have and accordingly I can provide you with step by step information to get your domain name transferred under our registration.

Our Bronze plan should be sufficient for you to run your website hosting and phpbb forum. Our Support Staff will assist you to help you with migration of your data and databases on our shared hosting servers. cPanel control panel is a feature rich control panel and you will find it quite handy to manage most of the things on your own.

You can create a new database from the control panel and then restore backup of your database from the Backup Manager section of your control panel. If you find it difficult to do yourself, then let us know and one of our support staff member on livechat or our helpdesk ( eUKhost Helpdesk :: Shared Reseller VPS Dedicated Server Hosting Support ) will take care of this.

cPanel comes with another addon called Fantastico. You can install many different types of blogs, forums, photo galleries and various content management systems. I would suggest you to get started with the signup process as everything else can be sorted step by step

You should start feeling comfortable with your web hosting account within next 2 - 3 days

    hi,

thank you both for your replies. i am completely new to managing a website hosting because like i said before mine is 'managed' by someone else for me. i give him the pages i want on the web site hosting and he does it all for me. but i need to think about doing it all myself as he isnt always around.
anyway, enough of that. my domain is a .co.uk one. i dont know if you need the full address or not, let me know if you do.
i know i have paid for the domain name so i am assuming it will be transferred to here if this is where i chose.

now i start to get lost when you start talking about contol panels and things about private server, (i told you im no good with computers ) i need something that is going to be easy to look after and that i can do myself on my private server.
i am wondering if it would just be easier to redesign the web site hosting rather than try to keep the other one going as i really have no idea about how it has been done. can i take all the data and just put it into a new private server? its the forum i really want to keep as it is because i dont want my members to have to rejoin or anything. is it easy enough to design a website hosting? is there anything that will help me set things out if i was to go with eukhost? basically my experience of designing a website hosting was an msn groups one, and they kind of set it all out for you, you just tweak it to how you want it. im sorry if i sound very green at this, but i have to admit that i am!
i have full admin control of the forum, the other guy just sets all the website hosting up and hosts the web site hosting for me on the private server. however i cant download any addons to the forum, that has to be done by this other guy
i have just looked at the admin control panel for the forum and yes i can back up the database, but i will be honest and say that i dont understand it all, but in answer to your question i am able to do it

i dont have any access to the 'guts' of the website hosting though. all i can do is look at it! i have had no idea how it was put together or anything. sorry i cant be more help on that. this is why i am thinking it might be better for me to just put all my info onto a brand new site???

im sorry to be so awkward

    Hi,
It may be best if you can copy your original web site hosting over to here including the forum with database full of members then it would be as it is currently for example under your control. Then in time you could install an online portal like phpnuke or wordpress / similar and run that as a website hosting? keeping the forum also. (website & forum)

It really depends how managed you want your previous web site hosting if its been designed for you, it may take a while to get to grips with it? but Im sure many on here would help

    Default Idiot's guides

    Hi

As a complete numpty, is there an idiot's guide to setting up a website hosting on here? I know that you techy guys are really helpful and all, but for a complete wassock, it gets too confusing the moment the words "phpp" or "wordpress" or "phpnuke" are mentioned, I go running for my medicine straight away!

Please direct me to a friendly page for dumbos.

    Thanks.

Php nuke / Wordpress are CMS

    CMS = Content management systems

Web Pages that are built for you, you just modify to suit

These are installed through Fantastico within cPanel

cPanel is the web hosting control Panel

It really depends what you are looking for within your site

    Hi

I understand books, so I will put my scenario in book form.

I would like a web site hosting with a Cover (picture, title, author), Contents page (with a way to hop to certain chapters), Chapters (writing, pictures, tables, maps etc). Some Chapters would need to have Sub-Chapters.

I think that's about it really, apart from, where needed, there would be links to pages within the website hosting itself, as well as other website hostings outside my own and a link to a forum.

If there were various sites I could look at, I could then say "I want that one!" The problem is, I don't know what is possible for people as thick as me, I need an expert to say, "Look at this site, even you could do that one."

    Thanks for your support.

    hi,

i get the feeling that my current website hosting is set up in a way that is far too complicated to me. i know when i wrote the pages the guy who manages it for me kept asking for the pages all in codes and things, well that all got far to complicated for me. i need something that i can do easily, something that appears on the page as it will do when it goes live. then i know what i am doing and how the pages will look.
the idea of webpages that are built for me and that just need a bit of tweaking to suit my needs sounds great lol i need a template that i can just fill in.

so if i went with the bronze package that costs £29.99 a year, plus the web site hosting builder that is £24 a year. would there be any other costs that i have missed?

one more question, how do i know if the bronze package has enough space for what i need. that bit really confuses me. is anyone able to provide any links to website hostings that are on a bronze package so i can see the sort of thing i can do on the private server?

    thanks again for your replies

    Hi Vicky,
You can always upgrade to a higher package and pay the difference so don't worry too much about the space etc. That would take 2 minutes for support to do.

Regarding web site hosting builder, I would be interested to see what you have already to say whether you need this. There is an editor in cPanel which allows you to modify sites.

If you could give us the full domain name, it would help us tell you what you need and don't.

You can make a web site hosting like that using some kind of editor e.g. dreamweaver or frontpage. There is also an editor inside cPanel (like the control panel in Windows) on the Linux shared hosting packages.

Your web site hosting would be an index page - the front cover, a main menu - the contents page, and then other pages which are linked to from that.

If you don't want to do it yourself, in cPanel you are able to install forums, blogs and other programs which allow you to have a website hosting and you have to do no coding. It's all done through graphics and intuitive options.

    hi,
my web addy is (i will post it on another post as its telling me i need 5 posts to be able to post a url)
like i said before i dont have any control over the website hosting, all i can do is look at it. it would be really nice for me to be able to look after it and add things when i want to rather than waiting for someone else to do it for me.

if you could have a quick look for me and give me some advice on what i will need that would be fantastic. (i didnt realise you could do that by looking at my website hosting)
i really appreciate any advice you can give me.
does the amount of space i need depend on how big my website hosting is or how many people visit it, or both? sorry, i have so many questions.
    thanks again

Don't worry about asking questions! We all have been at the stage you are at of being new to this!

The diskspace is to do with the files stored on your server i.e. the files that make up the site. So the images, webpages, downloads etc. which are stored on the server. From what you said above, this is "depend on how big my website hosting"

Everytime someone accesses one of these files, your bandwidth usage is what is used up here. If they accessed a 1MB file, you would use 1MB of your monthly bandwidth. Again, from above this is to do with "how many people visit it" but also what files they access e.g. a 1MB file uses less bandwidth than a 5MB file.

Looking at your site, it appears to use PHP which I would think you can edit from the editor in cPanel. Out of interest, how do you update it currently? Do you send someone a picture and the text or an actual web page?

    hi,

to update the web site hosting i write the document in word and send it to the guy who manages the site. he then puts it all into 'code' (i have no idea about that part, it confuses me) and then it appears as a page on the site.

this is all very complicated and the main reason i want to simplify things and take it over myself.
it would be much easier for me to have a template page and just add the things i want on it, and for it to appear as it would when it goes live. i cant see how things will appear if they are all written in code. i just want to be able to write it as its going to appear.

i hope all that makes sense

    Hello Vicky,

We provide RVSitebuilder and Web site hosting Builder with our web hosting plans for additional cost. You can choose Web site hosting Builder which will cost £24.00 per year. Web site hosting Builder will allow you to drag and drop images where you want, put content where you want to see it on your website hosting and so on.

Site Builder is quite similar to how you work with content and images in MS Word, however the interface appears different and method of submitting the web pages on completion is somewhat different. You can check some tutorials on RVsitebuilder and Web site hosting Builder from demodemo.com and request our staff to active your account on a server which supports one of the 2 website hosting designing softwares.

    Hi Vicky,
As Mark says, it's probably best you use one of the web site hosting builder software above. This will allow you to have an interface a bit like word and you can drag and drop things without any knowledge of the code behind it. I would suggest having a play with both of them and seeing which you prefer.

    hi,

right i have had a look at the web site hosting builder tutorial, and i think even i could manage to do that! it seems pretty much like the msn groups web site hosting that i had. so that is that bit sorted, i think i would be able to build a site and manage my private server.

now the next thing is, i am very confused by all the different packages and the different amounts of webspace and bandwidth.
for example the bronze package has 400MB of webspace and 5Gb of bandwidth but underneath that there are others that have a lot more. now i kind of get the idea about the webspace being the space my website hosting can take up and the bandwidth being the amount of people who visit the web site hosting and what they look at ? i really have no idea how big a MB and a GB is and how it relates to my website hosting.

what i dont have a clue about is if the bronze package will be big enough for my website hosting.

the web site hosting builder talks about certain packages being allowed so many web pages. so many of them being top level pages and so many being lower level pages. have i read this right?

    thanks for all your help!

    Hi Vicky,
I'm not sure about the web site hosting builder thing but I would suggest starting off with Bronze and as I said before, you can always upgrade to a higher package if you need to. There's no point paying for something you don't need!

I presume the web site hosting builder thing means so many main pages and then sub pages e.g. Menu, About, Contact etc. as top level and then lower level e.g. from About going to people, places etc. I can't say that's definately right but that's my guess.
