Default Windows 7: The Official Thread!

After finding out Microsoft is to release 6 versions of Windows 7 I thought we needed a thread about it - not about the six editions entirely, na - that wouldnt be fair!

I haven't tried out Win.7 properly yet, I tried it on VPC but my RAM was choking on 95% ... so I installed it on a separate partition then to find out my wireless doesn't work gonna have to dig around for my wireless drivers as anything I've tried from Vista installation folders dont seem to work...or either I get an installation error for not being Vista.

The thing that I didn't check was whether you can move programs from the taskbar so at the moment my browser is first on the taskbar, I want to be able to move that so it can be second or last in the taskbar list...that's one thing I liked about Ubuntu but unfortunately my keyboard doesn't seem to want to work properly in Ubuntu.

Quite a few programs in Win.7 have been changed including WordPad and I think Paint too...the only change they made to WordPad in Vista was the wrapping of the text in the document by default .

The only thing I don't like about Win.7 is that they (I think, anyway) only display icons for the programs open in the taskbar which even for my Mum will be very difficult to recognise which one the browser is

Looks like they're trying to force people to get used to (and like) the new MS Office layout.

Overall I quite like Windows 7, certainly seems better than Vista so far. Not sure that 6 editions are really needed, unless this includes the '-N' versions to keep the EU happy.

The -N OS wouldn't make a world of difference...I don't even know how they can term the basis of Microsoft of using anti-competitive tactics. "We believe you are the biggest market share thoughout the world,"

Isn't that what Mac essentially also do with their OS?

Have they removed the DRM controls though? That's what I want to know.

Having installed it a few weeks back I took it off with-in a couple of hours.

IMO it's not as good as Vista and, as ever with MS, it really shouldn't be called the next version of Windows. A better name would be Vista RC3 or Vista Service Pack 2 or Vista 2nd Edition.

No way could I connect to my wireless router (NetGear) yet it was intent on connecting to my friends router (BT HomeHub) who lives next door... Up here that's the next field away!

I couldn't get Vista back on quick enough which is not me. I've always Beta tested for MS since Windows 286 and 386 and always liked the Beta versions.

Didn't like it at all. They've done something with the meda rights but not too sure what.

Once Windows 7 is eventually released I wonder how long it'll be before new MS releases won't support XP just to force people to upgrade.

Urgh why couldn't they just leave it at XP or Vista? They'd done good then, but now I just get fed up of upgrading both hardware and software.

Well to be honest I thought they had given up supporting XP if they haven't it's coming up soon.

I had pre ordered 3 copies of Vista Utimate x64 and I had them well before the offical release... It's only recently that I've been able to get the drivers for my colour laser, photo printer and worst of all sound cards!

I don't think it would be anywhere in 2009 as XP is one of the Best and Stable OS that Microsoft has ever made for desktop users. And removing the support will make it vulnerable and people will switch to different available options...

However it would not affect me in any sense as I use Servers edition (only...) on my desktop...

I've finally got round to trying Windows 7. Pretty much like Vista as expected but has a few nice new features and some graphical updates. The biggest improvement so far I think is improve of ease of use (for novice - medium users anyway) and the system requirements are less than Vista so it runs better on your current hardware in most cases .

What are Micosoft's requirements and what are the real requirements? Normally you double the memory needed and the processor quoted is not available in the shops any more....

It has less requirements than Vista.

And if you have a Vista compliant machine 7 should be no problem for it .

The only thing I'm liking about 7 so far is the support for HDTV in media centre, i.e. it'll work with a satellite dish to play BBC HD and other free to air HD channels.

Yes, that is a good point. I think a lot of the improvements (apart from the reduced requirements) are aesthetically pleasing ones - the GUI seems to have been made a little more efficient and functional that previously.

Personally I've been running it on my laptop which is design for Vista so has all the drivers handy. Granted, I did have to manually install some Vista drivers on it but as it's running 95% of the same architecture under the bonnet it worked just fine.

Everything is a lot faster in Windows 7 than Vista. Granted it's got IE8 in instead of IE7 but it is just a much smoother experience when using it rather than having something max out the CPU for no good reason. And yes, some things have moved but it's just a case of finding them there once you've got used to them in Vista/XP.

Other nice things - can move gadgets around anywhere on the desktop which is quite handy. Also, the new Windows Media Player looks much more slick and again, is faster.

Seems like a tweaked and refined version of Vista which in my opinion is a good thing. Now I'm just waiting to be able to upgrade!
