I think it basically depends on your requirements and mostly one prefers the shopping cart he/she has used before. I will recommend using one from OS Commerce OR Zen Cart.

If you have a cPanel account you could easily install them from Fantastico option. It makes the installation complete like a breeze

Yes both are most popular cart but I hope OSC is good for advance users and for newbie Zencart should be good option.

Also, as both these Shopping Carts can be installed from cPanel control panel with Fantastico, it is an added advantage for all the Merchants as they can install it with a few clicks.
