    Default Keywords In Content

    Hello,

Just wondering, if you are ranking (or trying to rank) your homepage for a particular keyword phrase, is there any reason to try and get those keywords in the content on other pages of the site? Will it help with the overall theme of the site, which will help the homepage rank for that kw phrase?

    Thanks in advance!

If the keyword phrase is highly relevant to the home page, odds are it's pretty relevant to the whole site. At least some of those instances of the phrase can anchor links back to the home page, further signaling the home page's relevance to the phrase.

Yes, if you sprinkle keywords of your homepage within all the pages of your website properly then your website will become stronger for those keywords as the volume of those specific keywords of your Homepage will increase within your website. As those keywords will be present on all the pages of your website, it would be good for the Optimization of your Homepage.

My advice is to make this natural. Don't force your keyword relevancy by artificially inflating keyword density on other pages linked from the page you wish to optimize.

Raymond explained this very well but if you use this knowledge and artificially increase your keyword densities just so that your website will rank higher then you might end up dealing with google eventually.

The best way to go is to write natural content that is more focused around the keywords you want to target. Natural is the key.

I have a tattoo site that ranks on the first page in msn for the search term tattoos. But google penalized my site as I had the word tattoos written many times in my sitemap file. That was ofcourse done automatically and that file had that keyword density because all of my pages had the word tattoo in their title. I changed the sitemap so that all is ok with google.

Bottom line: try and get those keywords in the content on other pages of the site as it helps, but make it natural.

Correct. Do not overuse the keywords as this wouldn't do any good for you and this can create a Negative effect on your Search Engine Rankings rather than a Positive one. On an Average the Keyword density of the content of the website should not be more than 3-5%. Keywords should be used in a way that it seems as the Words were necessary in the sentence which would create a much better effect and give you better results.

Agreed with Catherine and automatic. Try to give more importance to phrases which are related to your customers. That is the only main reason to include it throughout the site if prospects or visitors will be looking for it.

while choosing the keywords one should always take care, it might be possible that different keywords may fail in the search results. So, this is the main reason reason one should consider choosing the keyword phrases that describes your website or products and are mostly searched by users. To find the popular keywords you can use the popular keyword suggestions tools like Google Adwords & Overture.

Google Adwords is mostly recommended for Getting an idea of the Keywords you should use within your website. Google Adwords also provides information about the number of times each Keyword related to your Niche/Topic is Searched on Google which would help you to use the keywords accordingly. As you will get an information of the Keywords mostly Searched, you can also Target some specific Keywords according to the requirements of your website.

It is more effective when you put the keywords in the content; many SEO pro's check the density of a page before finally deciding which keyword to use as the promoted keyword.

Writing the keyword in the page's title will also be very effective.

As far as I know, If you have a website and the URL http://www.website.com/keyword-keyword-keyword/ or http://www.website.com/keyword_keyword_keyword/ it won't make much difference but the URL with _ will be much more difficult than a URL with - and hence I think a URL with - is better than a URL with _

I would also like to know if someone has more information about this.

According to Matt Cutts blog post

"With underscores, Google’s programmer roots are showing. Lots of computer programming languages have stuff like _MAXINT, which may be different than MAXINT. So if you have a url like word1_word2, Google will only return that page if the user searches for word1_word2 (which almost never happens). If you have a url like word1-word2, that page can be returned for the searches word1, word2, and even “word1 word2″."

Thanks for that Macdale. Well, according to the post above, we should use - instead of _ and this is definitely better. Also, I would like to add that _ is mostly used in programming languages and is not a natural English term. Whereas, - is a term which can be remembered easily in comparison to _ which makes it better.

Thank you, Macdale! Till date I preferred using "_" as I was not aware about how it could affect the nature of keywords. The blog is really very helpful. I will make sure that I am no more using "_" in future. Definitely it is easier to remember "-" as compared to "_" also while searching on SE people prefer to use "-" rather than "_".

I think you should give high priority to use your targeted Keywords in anchor text and optimize the landing page effectively because it enhance the relevance of most of your pages based on individual page content corresponding to the keywords.
