Default Expired domain names : Being charged for them?

    Hi,

Just had a phone call from billing regarding a domain name that expired in August.

I no longer required the domain name and was happy to let it lapse.

There were a couple of other domain names in the past month or so, I already let lapse that I also did not require any longer. The entries are still showing in my WHCMS as "expired" which is rather annoying, but I've just ignored them so far.

I received an email saying I was late paying for a domain name and as such had been charged a "late fee".

This domain is no longer required. I don't understand why I am still being chased for payment for this domain and have had a late charge applied to it?.

Previously, if I no longer required a domain name, I just let it lapse/expire and that was it - I lost the domain name and was not charged for it. It was up to me to make sure if I did want to retain the domain name, that I made sure I paid for it and renewed it well before the renewal date or I lost all entitlement to it, which is only to be expected.

I've submitted a support ticket to billing regarding this issue and have quoted therin, the details of the domain concerned, which is the domain the woman was calling about this morning.

Hopefully this can be cleared up from here.

Just recieved a reply to the support ticket.

The domain has been cancelled and removed from billing information. Just checked in my WHCMS Client Area and yes indeed, it is no longer showing up in my billing info, so thanks for that guys.

Couple of things I would like to clarify though :-

    A) In future, when I receive an email informing me of a domain I own which requires renewing, if I no longer require that domain, must I contact billing every time and request that the domain be allowed to expire, explaining I no longer require it ( and therefore do not expect to be charged for it ) ?.

    B) The entries in the WHCMS in the "My Domains" section for old domains that expire, the ones highlighted in "pink". Is there a way for me to remove these from the list in WHCMS or again, must I submit a support ticket and ask for this to be carried out?.

It just makes things so much less cluttered, especially when you have multiple pages of registered domains in your WHCMS like I do!!!.

    Many thanks.

    Hi Gary,

We've had some customers who forgot to renew their domains for a month or so and then they started abusing our service once they lost their domains. Our billing department and collections department has been informed to communicate with customers who don't renew their hosting package or domains.

If you can send a simple email to our billing team and ask them to cancel a particular domains and remove it from your billing account then they won't chase you nor your billing account will look weird due to list of all expired domains.

Its always good to have only active hosting packages and domains in your billing account.

Thanks for the clarification Mark, appreciate it.

I will certainly keep that in mind for the future.
