Default Hyper V Semi Dedicated Windows Server - Backups

Hi - I am in the process of migrating my Windows 2003 semi dedicated server to Windows 2008 semi dedicated server.

I don't have a control panel and I need to ensure I have an effective backup regime in place.

I have been advised to purchase an offsite backup plan which I am happy to do, but I need to understand how this will work:

    • What software will be used to manage these backups? RSync or something else specialised for Hyper-V?
    • Will I be able to set this up as an automated job?
    • Will I be able to recover my server as and when I need to recover it?
    • Will I be able to recover individual files if I need to?

    Thanks,

    Nigel

    Hello Nice,

It's really nice to know that you are considering off site Backup pal for the safety.

I will answer your points inline.

    * What software will be used to manage these backups? RSync or something else specialised for Hyper-V?
Ans :- As you are having Windows Hyper-V Server , We will use 'robocoy' to manage backups from the server to remote backup server. 'Robocoy' is a windows Backup tool which works same like a RSync.

    * Will I be able to set this up as an automated job?
Ans :- yes. As per your request we will configure automated backup task on your server.

    * Will I be able to recover my server as and when I need to recover it?
Ans :- All your data will copy on remote backup server as per scheduled task. And you can use that backup at any point of time via FTP.

    * Will I be able to recover individual files if I need to?
Ans:- On plain server we will configure backup task for VHOST folder, Databases etc. So that you can recover individual files from the Backup server through FTP.

    Gareth,

Thanks for your comprehensive response. Three follow on questions:

    * Will I be able to recover individual files? You answered "On plain server ...", not sure how this affects things. Will I be able to configure the backup of any folders on my server?

    * Will the backup include a full image? Or will the server need to be rebuilt before my user data is restored in the event my server goes down?

    * Will the backups be incremental and how often will full backups be taken (i.e. non incremental)?

    Thanks,

    Nigel

Ans :- yes, You can configure the backup of any folders on your server.

Ans :- Backup will not be the full image. Server will be rebuilt if any problem or crashed.

    * Will the backups be incremental and how often will full backups be taken (i.e. non incremental)?

Ans :- Backup will be incremental and it will continue over right after the backup schedule task run.

Having to rebuild my server if there's a fault concerns me a little. After the server is rebuilt I would then have to reinstall all of my software and then restore the files from the backup.

So how long would a full rebuild take if there was a problem with my server?

    Regards,

    Nigel

    Hello Nigel,

    Thanks for your reply.
If you face any problem with your VPS or Hyper-V server and if you want to rebuild it. Then you just need to contact us and then your VPS or Hyper-V will be rebuild in 2 to 3 hrs. max.
And then you can download backup from your remote FTP account and thenn configure that backup again on new server.
