Default rDNS: should it be the hostname domain?

We have a VPS for our school with the hostname: server.ourdomain.com
I have two cPanel accounts on the VPS.
One cPanel account uses ourdomain.com and the other uses ourdomain.net

Today I noticed that email from the .net was being rejected by AOL servers with an rDNS error.

    1)
I thought our server had an rDNS of 'server.ourdomain.com'. Did AOL reject this because it isn't a 'fully qualified domain name'? Should it have been 'ourdomain.com' instead of the hostname?

    2)
On chat I asked for an rDNS entry to be made for our VPS. Because I was unsure of what I was doing, I used ourdomain.net instead of the .com (which matches the hostname).

Is this an error? Should I get it corrected?

    Thanks.

    Hello,

Reverse DNS can set to any domain pointing to the ipaddress & it is not necessary that reverse DNS should be pointed to the hostname only. AOL may have rejected the mail because there was no reverse DNs set.

OK, cheers. I'll just leave it as it is then.

It's weird that we've never had this error before though (or at least, I've not been made aware of it).
And as I said above, I really thought I had sorted rDNS out when we first got the VPS.
My other VPS server (which I set up at the same time) has the hostname specified.
It's hard to imagine that one would get done and not the other. It's possible though.

But anyway, just to confirm - my test mails are getting through AOL now, so thanks.

    Hi,

I have logged into your VPS to check the settings. We have not found any hosting account created for the domain name used in hostname. Please create cpanel hosting account for main domain name used in the hostname. So that rdns record will work properly and you'll not face any issues with emails.

lol. This is what I dislike about using this forum! I'm logged into here using one of my email addresses, which matches one of my VPS accounts, but I was actually talking about the other VPS account I maintain, which is registered using a different email address because it belongs to my employer.

I usually put the message 'Please don't make changes to my server. This post is for information only' before my forum posts to ensure no-one goes in and fiddles with the wrong VPS account!

I think I probably need to use two different forum accounts!

You may also open support request in order to avoid confusion in future while dealing with the issues.

As of now we have opened support ticket on your behalf. Please update the details in it so that we can troubleshoot further.

Well, when I want things actually done to the server, I open a ticket or go on chat.
The service is always excellent and fast.

Whereas, if I need to do some preliminary research and advice before I create a ticket,
then I come here do that. But I always have to tell staff not to go and meddle with my
account; that I'm only obtaining information or a clearer understanding about something.

Exactly what I'm talking about! The rDNS was changed in chat, and I came here to find
out if I had done the right thing. It turned out that everything is fine. That should have
been the end of the thread. I didn't need a ticket opened!

OK, so what I've done to solve this problem is to change my forum email address to one
that isn't used for my VPS accounts. Hopefully this means that staff won't be able to
identify me as a customer, and won't be able to act upon my forum questions so easily.

It's ironic that there are a couple of threads below this one about the poor quality of support, and yet here I am trying to stop staff from helping so readily and quickly!
