Default Think We Might Need To Go Dedicated

We took on a semi dedicated server just over a week ago thinking that would be ok for a new site we planned running a vBulletin forum, with Flashchat as an add on. We thought a semi would be ample to begin with but have been overwhelmed with the response.

We already have over 400 members and they have posted over 10000 posts in a week. In the last 24 hours we have approx 800 visitors and about 22.00 last night the server load was approaching 4 and decided to keel over for about 10 minutes.

We are going to get swamped we think on Thursday as the site is a replacement for one that is going subscription and 1st October is the cut off date, if last nights performance is anything to go by the server we have at the moment will just not cope.

Do you think we need an upgrade?

With a load that high? Certainly. Have you tried optimising your server to keep the load down? Litehttpd is very good for instances like this, so I've been told. Have you limited your MySQL config to only allow a certain amount of connections per user etc?

I've been looking at running nginx and changing the MySQL config file and editing my PHP.ini. but it's more than I can cope with being a newbie to all this.
