    Default VPS Down again!

Yesterday my VPS was inaccessible to myself and my clients for approx 3 hours.... I Say inaccessible because whenever I say the server is 'down' i get told that it is not 'down' it is still online.. its a service that has stopped or another favourite is the firewall must be blocking your ip!

Anyway... yesterdays disruption was caused by the DNS service that had stopped.... this was restarted by live support.. 30mins later it was inaccessible again! this time for approx 2 and a half hours! the reason... IP tables.... and then when I mention to billing that I have to compensate my clients I get told that my server was experiencing high resource usage! thats a new one....

I have been with EUK for a few years now and generally speaking it hasn't been that bad but after the recent problems (the second time in approx a month) I don't feel I am getting the service I once received and the mixed reasons for the failure is rather annoying... It wouldn't be too bad if everyone told me the same thing.

    Hi Tony,

If you could please PM me the IP address of your VPS, I can get this checked with our support team and let you know the exact cause of this from the available logs.

    Hi Tony,

The server your VPS is hosted on is up since:

    [root@EL2 ~]# uptime
    15:45:35 up 382 days, 4:04, 1 user, load average: 1.62, 1.69, 1.76

Hence it's not a host related issue & if you think so, we can have your VPS migrated over to our latest hardware node.

The exact problem with your Linux VPS is that it's lacking memory to run all the applications & services it hosts, hence the processes are being killed (DNS, Apache, etc), this is a normal behaviour of Virtuozzo, as if it'd not kill these processes due memory shortage, then a time would come where all the memory allocated to the VPS would be exhausted & the VPS will come to a halt. By killing these processes, it ensure to atleast keep the SSH access running so that such issues can be tackled.

Here are the logs from the host server, 10505 is the ID of your VPS (OOM = Out Of Memory & kill_signal = actual killing of processes):

I'd recommend upgrading the VPS to a higher plan or optimize the scripts which are responsible for hogging the memory.. I'll instruct our support staff to provide with the complete logs & correct information to the clients if they come across any.

@Repond, if it is any conscellation, just lately I ahve been ahving same issues. I enver had any issues until the start of this year. Have had various solutions to the same problem, non fixed it. Then like you I am told to upgrade.

I don't know about your case, but in my case the site had remained unchanged for a long time hence it was not the site causing memory issues despite what the logs say, something else must have changed.

I see youre system/support is also telling you it is memory related issues. I find it strange how all of a sudden memory has become an issue for everyone. Sounds to me like there is no burstable ram or oversubscription.

Let us know if you get any other issues, I have been resorting to SSHing in and sorting mine out myself whilst I look for a proper solution.

    Hello,

We don't actually advertise burstable RAM as a feature on our Linux VPS plans. The logs don't actually lie in these cases. There is a memory issue.

In the past our technicians were quite lazy in this regards and would frequently upgrade a client's RAM when these issues came up, as it was easier for them than opening a ticket, explaining the issue and having a client argue about the usage. With RAM being the main bottleneck for us on VPS nodes, that isn't really sustainable and we audit our nodes to ensure everyone has the correct amount of resources.

Now, if that memory use is the symptom of an underline problem or not is the question. Feel free to PM me your IP address and I will have someone monitor your VPS for a time and tell you which processes are using the resources. I'll then relay that information to you for you to confirm if it is a legitimate process.
    Kind Regards,

I can try and make you feel better too:
My VPS is running some tasks unknown to me between 5 and 6am CET every day that interrupts my web services. This morning I sent numerous screenshots of top showing very high average load but lack of php httpd load only to be told on 2 separate replies that "my scripts are causing high resource usage at the moment and I need to optimize them"

This happens every morning and myself and support are singing the same songs to each other every day.

One time some engineer thought out of the box and told me some exim cron task is causing the load and it went away after he did something .... but now we are back again and I'm getting the same generic replies, even when I namedrop the exim incident......

    Hello,

I've just changed the monitoring of exim to off and lfd to off on your VPS. These two things can be resource intensive and you are on the entry level package.

The downside being that WHM will no longer be monitoring the uptime of EXIM and LFD, which is something you have to keep in mind. If you wish, I can change it back.

MySQL and SpamAssassin are currently using up a good portion of your resources as well.

Keep in mind that you have WHM running as well, which in itself checks for updates every day. You will get resource fluctuations between versions. You can change this frequency in your update preferences.

Thanks for looking into my issue. I have now been migrated to a newer node and things have definately improved. No more regular uptime alerts.

For the last few days I have been experiencing similar issue too. After informing support I got the usual eUKHost generic cryptic email reply telling me nothing more than what I already knew. Who writes these emails, some out of work/retired politician, they usually contain nothing more than a lot of poor english grammer that doesn't actually tell you anything !

After being told, just like others here, my site was using too much load, I investigated the logs and found that the possible cause was in fact a malicous attack ! I wrote to support again yesterday informing them (still waiting a reply), this is part of the email I sent. Maybe will help others to find a solution to their problems...

"Your initial reaction to my cry for help was that my sites where putting too much load on the server, rubbish !!!

My sites have never used more than around 50% of the ram, so when it reached 94% you blamed the sites and turned off services to save RAM. You even gave me part of a log showing that there was too much load on the server.

Did it ever occur to anyone there that there might be something malicious happening to the server ??? No !

    Looking through my logs today I find that the server was under some sort of “proc/self/environ” attack !! Hence why the sudden increase in load. Taken from the logs, look at the IP entries for 216.83.154.114;

I think it's time that eUKHost took on some responsibility and had a more professional approach to thier clients. I have had nearly 3 years of continual problems with them and never get any sort of apology or reimbursement for failing to deliver what they claim as being thier uptimes etc.

I could go on for hours but I think you get the picture....

Have already replied back to your email and added your MSN name to my contacts.

Funny how the forum works better than the support system !

    Hi,

I was unclear from your message of the exact issue. To be honest our technicians wouldn't usually go through someones site visitor logs looking for suspected attacks when there is resource usage. We would usually check in top, note the processes down, alert the customer to what is causing the use. If you then came back to us and said you don't believe that number of httpd processors are legitimate, that is when we would usually start the investigation.

When you go into the support system, you have the potential of being answered by over a hundred different technicians who have varying degrees of experience. I referred you to John R as I would consider him the top for investigating VPS resource usage problems. That's the benefit of the forum for sure.
    Kind Regards,
    John - Managing Director

No !

    Looking through my logs today I find that the server was under some sort of “proc/self/environ” attack !! Hence why the sudden increase in load. Taken from the logs, look at the IP entries for 216.83.154.114;

    Hi,

I understand John R and Cristiano pointed you in the direction of your database yesterday. I hope everything is now fine!

    Err not quite..!

John R and Cristiano ran some virus scans on the server and attempted to install some security measures. I say "attempted" as in fact all it did was to shutdown one of my sites and lock me out of the controling admin panel of another ! They were asked to revert these measures, I was then able to access my sites as normal and figure out myself what the problem was and how to rectify it.

I traced the problem to a corrupt database, even though I had already (several times) replaced it with a back up after the SQL Attack.

Although they didn't actually help me with the reported problem they did make a thorough job of checking my sever for virusses and malicous files. Nothing was found but it did let me sleep a little easier! Thanks for thier help with this.

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately I have already had your people look at it and got no where. They supplied processes that were apparently the problem, however as I said before some of the sites that are being reported as a problem have not been touched or changed, and hence I cannot see why they would create a problem all of a sudden.

I am happy for you to take another look, but nothing major has changed to cause this, that is what I cannot seem to get across to anyone. Why has doing nothing suddenly caused these problems?

Logs clearly shows that the php scripts running under your VPS is using high memory, due to which its getting killed and you were facing such problem.
You need to check your site scripts and apply updates to use less resources.

Thank you for that, but this is no different than what you guys have said before and no different than what I can see my self in the logs.

I am getting fed up with repeating myself, I have said this several times on this forum, in PM's, on LiveChat, there was nothing wrong and no crashes until January. End of January and the problems start. NOTHING had changed at that point. Indeed little has been changed to date to cause this. I know what the logs say, but if the code has not changed, then how can it be the code?

I have a test server with lower specs than the VPS, running copies of all the sites, and that doesn't cause any memory issues unless I load it with several thousand hists per second.

    Has anything else been upgraded?

I have had the sites running, in one case for 3 years another 2 years with little change to the code what so ever. Most of the code is Drupal, which runs fine on most other servers, indeed as I said has been running fine here until January. The sites even crash when there is few visitors, which is when memory usage should be low.

Secondly, the log you show is, as they are, useless, if I have say 3 or 4 sites running, the log doesn't show which one is causing the problem, or which page was being called.

So once again I am no further forward!

    Thanks anyway.
    Nick
