    Default VPS Feels sluggish

I just want to start by saying I've had fantastic support from EUKHost probably the best support i have ever had from any company in all honesty.

The problem is I have a simple hosting account with someone else which is coming to an end soon, But I always have this feeling that my VPS feels sluggish in comparison.

I do always get slower ping's to my vps over my other host..

    C:\Users\Chris>ping vps.fusionticket.co.uk

    C:\Users\Chris>ping noctem.co.uk

Pinging noctem.co.uk [89.21.3.19] with 32 bytes of data:

OK I know this isn't much but its noticeable. Along with other factors like script execution time and other factors I feel like its just slower.. I have joomla on both hosts and its much quicker on the noctem site. compared to my vps. I have a feeling its a network issue more than hardware/software...

If you could look into this It would be appreciated.. as we are launching a new product soon and I would like to feel confident about possibly have a few dedicated hosts from you. And currently I have the feeling they will be just as chuggy as my vps is now.

    Many thanks,
    Chris

And just to clarify I know I am not heavily loading the server I check usage and my loading is always very low.
I also regularly update Cpanel/MySQL/Apache PHP

It could be someone else on the node - maybe open a ticket with support if there isn't an answer on here fairly soon.

Nope. No other vps is utilizing heavy resources. I have made some changes in network configuration on main node and it should be fine now.

Also i have replied to your ticket.

I'm having similar issues with my VPS. It is a higher spec than my previous VPS with a different host, but feels much much slower. I am running a few Wordpress blogs and the delay when saving updates make my sites unusable.

Can someone who understands these issues (live chat has so far proved fruitless) look at the settings on my VPS please and see if they can be optimized otherwise I will need to, very unwillingly, change hosts.

    Regards
    James

    Hello James,

I have checked load on your vps as well as on main node and it's normal. Still i have optimized VPS configuration and could see it already helped. Currently vps is using 81 MB out of 512 MB.

Please give a try and let me know the results.

Thanks Scott - I will test and report back.

Out of interest, and for the benefit of other non-tech VPS owners like myself, what are the key settings that need to be 'optimized'?

    Cheers, James

    Dear James

Scott has made some changes in vps's configuration file , on main hardware node to enhance the performance of your vps.
Also , he has updated cPanel to latest version in release build in order to keep your vps updated
Hope all these tweaks work for you

The issue got better but was not fixed.

I have a VPS with another provider and have canceled my one with eukhost. The other VPS is lower spec with more more running on it than this one did and its still much faster.

Hardware wise its pretty much the same. only really differnce is that it is CentOS 5 and using Xen virtulisation.

Im not saying EUKHOST are bad... It just seems the issue wasnt fixed to a satisfactory level and thus I moved.

Also check the servers DNS settings. It made a big differnce to some of my sites loading times which have other content in there.

Thanks for sharing this. It looks like I'm in the same position and may well have to move.

However, I'm curious about what you changed with your DNS settings that made a big improvement to your sites loading times?

    Cheers

Here are the results of page loading tests I've run more than once and via different tools.

As the results are so similar regardless of the size of site, I wonder whether I have got DNS issues. All of these sites have custom nameservers pointing towards my VPS - and were set up and configured for me by a tech-expert.

    Any suggestions?
    James

    Thumbs up Hello

    Hello,

Following is the resource usage for your VPS
    load average: 0.01, 0.03, 0.00
    Disk space usage: 26%
Free memory: 379 MB out of 512 MB

We have repaired and optimized mysql databases for jameswatsononline.com, delsole.co.uk websites. Also added DNS zone for both nameservers. intoDNS: jameswatsononline.com - check DNS server and mail server health
Better to delete unnecessary nameservers, but it should not cause any slowness.

You can check website accessing speed on Website Speed Test

If websites are still loading slow then I need to know details of your scripts.

DNS wise just the dns server it uses to resolve its domain names. same way your desktop does.

But i dont know what the issue is with the eukhost vps's are as i had the same thing, my server was pushing very little yet page loading times we still slow.

I really dont know what the issue is, I've done many tests, and really the only differnce between EUKHOST and my host now is the hardware inbetween the server and my isp and the server is centos5/xen instead of virtuoso/centos4

So really its up to eukhost to do some really indepth analisis against other providers to see what the issue is. It might just be that my ISP has better peering to my current VPS over the EUKhost but my other users have noticed an improvement.

I cant really offer much help than to say check you dns resolvers and keep WHM at least on CURRENT as theres an optimised v2 out now for WHM.

@Shane - Thanks for for your help. This kind of help/support is indeed rare and much appreciated.

Thanks also for your suggestions Chris.

    8 ******.com 21.86 KB 15.97 seconds 0.73 seconds

I've been tracking the load times today and they are much better, although there is still a 15s delay for some sites. All of my sites are running Wordpress scripts. All but one are small sites in terms of size and traffic.

I'll continue to monitor this but for now I'll be staying put.
    Thanks
    James

I think Jonathan was hoping it was Virgin . But I already checked so sorry to disppoint you Jonathan!

I'm with Virgin and get a good 20MB connection most of the time with speeds peaking at 50MB. All in all, very satisfied.

Hmmmm. It sounds as if it could be a peering problem. Have you tried pinging any other eUK servers to see if it's specific to one server?
