Default vps out of memory - tweaking suggestions anyone ?

    Hi,
    I'm after some optimisation tips

I have a l-vps01 vps, but it is running between 90-95% ram
It runs 1 live website, with around 200 meg data transfer a month, some non live sites, 3 quiet mailman lists, email with spam assassin and apache serving web requests with mod security configured

nothing special but I think it has out grown the 512mb ram on a vps01 plan

I looked into cloud vps hosting but I cannot afford to double my spend just to get say 1 gig ram - the live site is not for profit - I don't charge them hence I don't want to double my spend as there isn't income going to vps02 seems a waste - 128 more mb, but I won't use the disk space or bandwidth - expensive 128mb ram

Anyone got any tips from experience where I could shave some ram but not reduce security ?

    Cheers

    Andy

    Hi Andy,

By default Linux will use as much memory as it can. While it may show that 90 to 95% is in use, you might not need to upgrade your package because the operating system uses the memory to increase its performance. You can have a look at the following website which has a bit more information on how memory works: Help! Linux ate my RAM!.

If you want us to have a look at whats going on right now feel free to send us an e-mail.

    Hi,

Support have looked at my system and it has run out of ram - OOM errors on the node - 70 megs free as I write this reply - I have disabled modsec but it looks like my configserver mailscanner is still gobbling memory as the main culprit - thanks support for looking into it

I'll drop sales a line and see if there is anything they can offer - cloud far exceeds my requirements and pocket, yet I fear vps02 will not be enough giving 128mb and vps03 is still under 1gb

    Cheers

    Hi,

I went for a cloud vps upgrade in the end, just too much on my system for 512Mb
