Default Why can't VPS customers use a shared SSL certificate?

    Hi first time poster here.
I have just started evaluating the eUKhost VPS service and have run into a problem with SSL certificates.

My previous host company 1&1 provided a shared SSL certificate for use by any customer, and I believe eUKhost does the same for clients using the shared hosting service.

However eUKhost technical support tell me I will have to either use an unsigned certificate on my VPS or buy a dedicated certificate.

Why is it not possible to use the same shared certificate the shared hosting customers use? Is it a technical limitation?

Apart from that the eUKhost service seems pretty good. Compare the page load times of my homepage served from eukhost compared with the same page served from 1&1

eUKhost purchases SSL certificates that are then assigned to each server based on the server name; when accessing a website using the shared SSL service the address will be in the format 'https://servername.eukhost.com/accountname/'.

VPS servers are completely different from shared web hosting in the way that you have your own dedicated IP address and server name, therefore meaning that you will have to purchase your own dedicated SSL certificate.

VPS are virtual servers with their own server resources like diskspace, RAM, CPU etc… thus it’s a server having its unique identity and hence you cant use a shared SSL certificate with your VPS. You cant expect to share a single SSL certificate over many servers having different IPs and server resources, whereas sharing a single certificate is possible on shared hosting account as it can be installed on shared server and can be assign to different accounts hosted on that particular server.

A number of VPS's are created on a single Dedicated server using a Virtualization software. Hence, each VPS has it's own resources and also each VPS makes it's own unique identity. A VPS is just like a Small Dedicated server and hence it is not possible to Share an SSL certificate between a number of VPS's.

Thanks for the explanation. I will just have to bite the bullet and invest in an SSL certificate.

Now you are confusing me again. How does that page relate to this one I found by following links from the eUKhost homepage _www.eukhost.com/ssl-certificates.php_

Is one of those pages obsolete?

    Hi Derek,

You can view the SSL certificates we offer at eUKhost - Private SSL | Dedicated SSL Certificates

The other web page is a comparison page for SBS SSL certificates which were offered previously. We no longer offer SBS SSL certificates except for SBS EV certificate.

I would suggest you to order SSL Certificate of your choice through - eUKhost - Private SSL | Dedicated SSL Certificates
