    Default Dedicated Server vs. Hosting?

Can someone clear up a simple novice query.

I simply required a hosting solution for my e-commerce website with more than 5gb space.

I was told to use a semi-dedicated server.

HOWEVER, i was not told how different it would be to use a server compared to hosting.

I think i am way out of my depth and may cancel my semi-dedicated server.

Can someone clear up the following for me:

1). My site requires an object handler to process form queries (such as email a friend and site surveys) such as CDONTS or similar. Is this (or anything similar) on my server?

2). Why have i got two IP addresses and which one should i upload my site to?

3). Once i have uploaded my site to an IP, do i simply ftp my data to the httpdocs folder of that IP?

4). Where do i even start to create email accounts for domain. I need 5. (one for sales, tech support, trade, customer service etc). Will i need any other components for this?

I am basically lost in a world of servers. Should i revert back to a hosting solution so that CDONTS and Webmail etc are all handled by the hosting company? Then the only thing i will have to do is upload via ftp, and let someone else worry about components...

Ans :- All our Windows shared hosting plans support CDOSYS asp components. You can check details of all supported CDOSYS ASP Components at CDOSYS ASP components

Ans :- Any VPS or Semi-Dedicated server or a Dedicated Server will need minimum 2 IP addresses to allow working of a website. If you will be hosting your nameservers on your semi-dedicated server then both nameservers will need 2 separate Dedicated IPs. You cannot host your nameservers on a VPS, Semi-Dedicated or Dedicated Server without 2 Dedicated IPs.

Ans :- Thats right. I'm assuming that you have Plesk control panel installed on your semi-dedicated server and httpdocs is the directory in which you need to upload your web contents to make them visible from a public URL on your domain name.

Ans :- You will need to login in your plesk control panel to create the mailboxes. You can check Plesk tutorials from Plesk Tutorials to learn how to create mailboxes from the plesk control panel.

A dedicated server is a single computer in a network reserved for serving the needs of the network. For example, some networks require that one computer be set aside to manage communications between all the other computers.
***You love Spamming, huh?*** is a service that Web hosting companies provide to their customers whose websites generate a lot of traffic. Essentially, and entire server is used for a single customer, ensuring that all of the server's resources are used to that customer's needs

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but I am a newbie!

So can one use a normal host like one.com or godaddy.com with a simple hosting plan to manage and host an e-commerce site? ...

I am looking for the same, please advise.

    Many Thanks

You can sign up for cpanel hosting with Eukhost if your ecommerce site is not high traffic, high demand.
For our own clients we offer Cubecart (and we reskin the theme/design). Cubecart is auto install in Fantastico, which is part of cpanel, so you don't need any special knowledge to get up and running. You can use one of the basic themes which comes with it (you will need expert knowledge if you want a custom theme)

Basically cpanel hosting is shared (vps or cloud is the nevet level up) and this is fine for many sites, it's only when you get top end, serious ecommerce and loads of customers a day you need to consider something more powerful. That's also when you would have the money to fund your own dedicated server.

It all depends on what you plan to do, but as I say, most people are fine with cpanel shared, until they get big and successful
