Default Joomla install on IIS 7

Having an issue installing Joomla onto Windows Server 2008 with IIS 7. Running the most up to date versions of PHP and MySQL.

Everything seems to be working fine on the server - I've uploaded all the files, created a MySQL database etc. and am going through the installation - everything on the initial screen shows it has the right setting. Set all the MySQL stuff which also works fine - tables are created in the database. FTP sockets layer isn't needed as it's a Windows server and then I get to the configuration of the site - the name, email address etc.

Once I click ok on this final page all I get is a 500 error. Now I can't work out why on earth it would do this so wondered if anyone had experienced it before or had any ideas? Googling it doesn't help too much either...

    Any help much appreciated.

Hi JC... you can browse the newly installed Joomla from the server directly to get a detailed error output.. I doubt it'd be permissions or related to the PHP Handlers..

Try disabling custom error messages in your browser first, then you'll get a detailed error output.

Ahh custom errorsare to be turned off in the server/site configs, doing so inturn can be dangerous.. Errors, at times display sensitive information, including connection strings, table prefixes, variables, etc etc.. which you'd never want any of your site visitors [or malicious anon users] to look into, will you ?

Ahh this is due to permissions as I mentioned.. make sure IUSR_xxxx & IWAM_xxxx have read/write permissions on the entire Joomla installation. After the install is done, you can safely remove the write permissions & leave the read-only as they are.. Good luck with it..

I just want to say a HUGE thank you to Jack for helping me sort this. It took both of us (primarily him mind!) several hours of work to get the installation moved from Linux to Windows Server 2008 and secured. Still a few minor issues with things but the site is online (which gets some people off my back for a while!) at UCSB Experimental Cosmology - Deepspace Group. ESPECIALLY JACK!

And now the exciting part is the person who installed the OS initially installed too high a build of Windows Server 2008 on the trial so I need to do a clean install. However we're getting a new hard drive and I shall configure it all before trying to move things across.

Prepare yourself for another load of questions!

That's all still to come. HDD should hopefully be here tomorrow and then I just need to find a spare tower in the lab to get configuring. Once that's done, I'll start the migration stuff.

And yes, I'm still changing the site. I'm clearing out all the rubbish which was put on there previously, correcting code and generally setting things up to work. Connected up the weather station on the roof of the building today which is now displaying live data on the homepage.

I am having a mySQL issue (I think it might be code related but not sure) which I will need to ask you about at some point but having a pretty busy week!

As mentioned here it was a permissions issue. [IUSR_xxxx & IWAM_xxxx have read/write permissions]. Please provide us the exact errors/links you're facing with the CMS install & we'll help you with them.. Also, you can provide us the access details of your server so that we can login to check the problem & fix it.

    Default Solved!

Thanks a million for quick reply. I got the problem solved, as you said it was the permissions.

I had to change permissions and windows authentication to get it to work.

My problem was just massively complicated as I was moving an install across from linux to Windows. But it's all sorted now.

As I understand it then these permissions should be on the Installation folder ONLY or the whole Joomla folder?

    Thanks in advance!
