Default Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0 on Windows Server 2008 sr2

    Hi All,

I am trying to setup alerts on our Window Sharepoint Server hosted with EUK.
There are a number of methods to set this up but given that we do not have a MS Exchange server I am looking into relaying elsewhere.
Althought relaying is normally blocked I am under the impressiont that if you can authenticate with the company you are trying to relay though that it should be ok.

I have setup the SMTP service on the server and confirmed its running.

I have gone into IIS SMTP Properties>Access>Relay>Stated the servers IP address. I have also gone into Delivery Tab>Authentication and setup this as Basic Authentication to include the username and password of the account I have at the company I would like to relay though.

I have gone into Sharepoint>Operations>Outgoing email settings and set this to point to the server hosting the email and placed the same email address in both boxes availalble.

I have created the alert and ensured the email address is present on my test user but the I am still unable to get emails to send although there are a number of articles on the web stating that it should work. Anyone set this up and having it working?

At the moment I getting some very mixed messages from EUK.

    Hello

We do not provide shared sharepoint hosting on our shared servers. So I will assume you have a vps or dedicated with us.

Kindly provide me the support request number you have for further investigation.

    Regards
    Ray

Gabriel has contacted me personally and worked tirelessly to sort my issue out.
We are not quite there yet but its not through lack of effort on Gabriels part.

Thanks for coming back to me Gabriel, looking forward to finally getting it sorted.

    Hello Wayne,

Previously your email system was messed up due to incorrect configuration which has been corrected now.

Your sharepoint account is hosted on Windows server where as you used Exim mail service of your Linux server to send emails of sharepoint.
You can not send emails of Windows server accounts from Linux mail server without authentication when authentication is must on Linux server.

The remaining issue is, your sharepoint is failing to send alerts due to incorrect configuration.
We have fixed your SMTP issue, installed SmarterMail, created email account in it for you. We are looking into your alert configuration even though your third party tool configuration does not come under our scope of support.
