Choosing the hosting platform basically depends on your requirements. If you are looking forward to host sites developed using applications developed by Microsoft, you can choose a Windows hosting plan or server, otherwise, a Linux based hosting plan or server should be fine for you.

If your website requires any of the Microsoft technologies such as ASP .Net and need an MSSQL database at the back-end, you are left with no option other than choosing a Windows Hosting package to host your website. On the contrary if your website uses MySQL and is developed using PHP, you may opt for Linux hosting package.

I hope that clears your doubts. If it doesn't I would suggest you to please check the following pages :

Compared between the two, Linux is considered to be more secure and stable. Also, Linux being an open source, is quite economical compared to Windows.
The selection between Windows or Linux will completly depend on the applications or the scripts that you wish to run.

It's WINDOWS, a Microsoft Product & not Widows... a very vast difference when the latter is compared with Linux

It is true that there are many Linux based applications which are compatible with Windows platform and can be run on it ? If so, then why people opt only for Linux based hosting ?

There are multiple reasons that support the choice of Linux. Better security than Windows is another very strong reason that makes us think of choosing this OS. Then, it is open source, comes in different flavors, it is affordable, better to manage blah blah blah are some of the strong points that come with Linux.

If I had to give you my honest view, I would highly suggest you go ahead and utilize a Windows package. This way you are already familiar with the software. Even though Linux has its benefits, and you could reap them if you use it, Windows is just familiar with all of us.

I think this does not imply to Windows shared and reseller hosting plans as customers do not get access to the operating system of the server if they choose any of these plans. They only get access to the control panel which is used to manage their accounts and it's no where similar to Windows operating system.

The first major difference is the cost that is the basic concern.Windows server is high in cost as Microsoft owns and develops windows operating system on the contrary Linux is open source software and it is generally free of cost.
