Default What qualifications to go for??

    Hi there,

I have just successfully completed the Cisco IT Essentials 1 course, which I felt was a little too basic and it's not really something that would lead to a exciting new career!

I am now struggling to decide what to do next??It has to available on a part time basis (to fit in around a 8-5 job) so a degree is out!

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Cheers
    Tony

    Hi Tony,

I would suggest you to consider some Perl scripting course or VMWare Certified Professional exam.

You can never run short of jobs if you become a Perl programmer.

I'd suggest that you have a look at the CCNA. If you need any more information on the CCNA then contact Thomas or Dan here on the forums and they should be able to offer you some info and advice.

Don't forget you can do degrees part time as well! The only thing is they take a number of years extra complete - some Computing course up to 8 years I believe - so its not a fast option unless your willing to go full time but the result is good if you can wait that long .

    8 years?!

8 years in technology is a very long time and by that time most of what you would of learnt would be quite outdated.

Indeed but the idea of University is give you the skills to learn as well as the actual content itself.

For example, I am on a 3 year honours degree. I will finish in 2012 aged 24. Now, even if I was in a fantastic job, well paid etc, you wouldn't be thinking I'd be retiring before 55 at the absolute earliest.

25 years after I've finished my degree I'll still be in the sector but no doubt most things will have changed from the days of my degree.

However because University gave me the learning skills as well as the content I can use these learning skills throughout my career to stay up to date with the latest information .

CCNA has become too common now. I know few 10 and 11 year old boys who got CCNA Certification. There's absolutely nothing in CCNA. We have many staff members with CCNA certification, but none of them works on Routers.

I have never seen any perl or python programmer sitting idle at home, you always get offers from companies and you find it difficult to decide whether to continue with current job or switch.

You may consider MCSE or VCP certification. Almost 80% of our corporate customers have high specification windows servers and they always keep on running short of windows system administrators. VMWare is the most popular Virtualization and cloud computing software at present, but companies always keep on running short of VCP's to manage their VMWare setup.

I can understand thats it difficult to return to full time education after you've already embarcked on a career and starting a family. Thats why I am doing it now.

Good luck with whatever you finally decide and do keep us posted on your succes

Nope, not yet. I don't think I could cope with young kids 24/7!

I would hope that someone in a position of authority would be disencouraging pregnancy and parenthood at that time

I have decided to investigate the CCNA route a bit further due to lack of programming experience.... well any experience really... might be better to start at the bottom and climb up through the qualifications....

Having kids is great ..... especially when they are asleep!!!!!!

    Cheers

My 2 year old nephew is a big time trouble for everyone, but he sleeps as soon as I take him out for a drive.

Absolutely, "Do what you love to do" is one of the most basic productivity tips of all. The fact is that you'll be much more productive when you do work you enjoy.. for that you need to be well equipped with all the knowledge you have about that particular work profile.. then only you can be successful & happy with your work

It depends on what you want to do moving forward, a programming language is great if you want to be a full time coder, or if you want to pick up extra work on the side.

But a degree is almost essentual if you are interested in management at some point in the future, you can take part time degrees and in the UK there is the open univercity to help with qualifications.

if you do want to go the programming route I would recomend you write some usful code to use as an example when speaking with perspective employers
