Delays in downloading all items on a page

I have a couple of static websites on the gateshead host. All the pages are pretty lightweight even those with quite a lot of images. But logs show that after a few images are downloaded there is a delay of typically 10 seconds before more images are fetched. There may be further such delays before the whole page is downloaded. One page often takes around 30 seconds to download on a 6.5 Mbps connection.

These are some of the tests I have done:

Test 1: Different browsers/OSes/computers:

* open a web page in these browsers on a Mac: Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera
* open a web page in these browsers on Windows: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome

Result 1: The problem has been there in all cases.

Test 2: Different locations/ISPs

* open a web page from homes in west London, Surrey and Ascot
* open a web page from a corporate network in the City of London

Result 2: The problem has been there in all cases.

Test 3: Different website host

* upload the website source to a subdirectory of another website (on a different host from the two problem websites, then requesting it in a browser)

Result 3: There is no problem. The page loads in less than a second every time.

To me it looks like there is an issue with the host but support staff haven't been able to see the problem.

I have an open ticket for this issue (#WOT-700-84405) but as responses have been slow and it is now very urgent that it is fixed, I am keen to know if anyone else has experienced the same, and if there are any ideas on what to do about it.
