Hi,
You can change the default index. file for your domain from a .htaccess file which is located under the public_html/ directory of your domain.
The code youwill need to enter in .htaccess file is as follows.
DirectoryIndex The default index. file for your domain

Thanks for the fast response. Problem is there is no public_html folder. Could that have disappeared? Do I have access to it? If I create one and a .htaccess file will that resolve the problem? See attached file list.
Are you positive it was there before, or maybe that it was not removed? Things do not just disappear people usally end having something to do with it.![]()
Thanks Ralf - I have done that. However if, for example, I delete the default index from the code the site still works. Is it tagged somewhere else as well? Why I am no longer able to change this via Plesk Cpanel? Apologies for ignorance!!
Hi Peter !
To change preferences of an existing site/domain for ordering the default index pages, please follow these steps in the Plesk control panel:
- On your home page, click the domain name you need to modify the default pages for.
- Click Web Directories in the Hosting group.
- Find the directory which preferences you wish to change (httpdocs), & click Preferences in the required directory.
To change the preferences of that particular directory:
- Use default documents - select this checkbox to allow the use of default documents for the current web directory. The default document is sent when users access the directory on the Web without a specific file name (for example, using 'http://www.domain.com' as opposed to 'http://www.domain.com/index.html'). If this checkbox is cleared & the Directory browsing checkbox is selected, the Web server returns a folder listing. If this checkbox is cleared & the Directory browsing checkbox is cleared as well, the Web server returns an "Access Forbidden" error message.
- Default documents search order - specifies the order in which IIS searches for the default document, sending user the first available file it finds. If no match is found, IIS behaves as in the cases when the default content page is disabled.
Please let us know if you still any further assistance with this![]()
