Default SSH Access with Business Plan package

Re-posted here as got no response in the technical support forum:

I recently set up a Business Plan account for a project I am working on. I wanted a higher level of server as this project was more serious then previous projects.

After getting it up and running I asked for ssh shell access to be enabled which it was. Then last night, two weeks later, it was cut without notice. When I emailed support I was told "... we do not provide SSH access on Business Plan servers." !!

I do not understand this as I have shell access for the much cheaper Silver Plan.

This is disastrous for me as to professionally develop the site I need to use vi and the command line, and run shell scripts.

This has put my project at risk, and I could potentially lose it and a lot of money. I feel like I've just been shafted be eukhost.

Why can you provide shell access for Silver Plans but not Business Plans, I don't understand your logic?

    Hello Mike,

The logic behind providing shell access on a Silver plan and not on a Business plan is not the cost difference between them. In recent time we have been noticing too many intruders activities on our Linux shared server which has forced us to put more aggressive security polices which also includes disabling shell access and some nasty php functions. However there are few clients who think that it is more important to have shell access as well as those insecure php functions to run their site then having a more secured server. Therefore we now have a complete different server which has shell access and php function enabled on it and any one who needs them is warned about the insecurity of the server and then transferred, since we cannot put all other client's security in question just for one client by enabling those features. This is possible because we have enough clients to have them all on one server however Business hosting is different setup than a normal shared server. It is a combination of 2 servers for 100% uptime and the amount of signups for a Business hosting package is not enough to have an entire different setup of 2 servers just for ssh and php functions. And above all, security is very important as all our clients on these servers require high availability of their websites.
I hope that explains the logic behind your SSH question.

I will have one of the senior Linux admin to check on why was SSH enabled when it is not provided on Business hosting.

    Thank you for being patient.

    OK, thanks for responding.

But shell access is allowed on VPS and semi-dedicated servers.

I guess I need to migrate to one of these to get my shell access back.

VPS (L-VPS-1) is about the same prices as the Business Plan, but semi-dedicated is about double so I guess VPS is the best bet.

So i get more control, bandwidth and webspace with VPS but 99.95% guaranteed uptime rather than 100%, is that the main difference?

You don't get more control but full control, just like a dedicated server, with a VPS. You can install your own software and configure your own security. However the fact still remain that it cannot guarantee 100% uptime.

The main difference between VPS Hosting and Business Web Hosting is guaranteed amount of resources for your own usage and complete isolation from other accounts on the same server apart from shell access. You will also have the ability to install third party software/applications of your choice on the server.

Business Web Hosting plan was introduced for those customers whose topmost priority is 100 % uptime for their websites.
