    Default CPanel Hosting and Setup

After much looking at providers I have now decided to go with a cPanel setup but I have a couple of quick questions first.

I have an already existing web site and a new version developed using a CMS.

What I want to do is set up the new site while leaving the domain name pointing at the old site until I am happy that everything is working correctly. Once the new site is up and running I will update the nameserver entries for the domain name to point to the new site and decommission the old one.

    My questions are:

How do I access the hosted site if there is no specific domain name pointing to it, am I right in assuming it will be by IP address?

Is the access URL when there is no domain name at the root level of the site (i.e. will absolute direcory URLs embedded in pages resolve correctly for this method of access and once the domain name is in place)?

    Hi There!

You can order cPanel Hosting plan of your choice from our website by choosing the option "I will update my nameservers on an existing domain". Nameservers information will be sent to you via email once your account is setup. Once the new site is up and running, you can update the nameserver entries for the domain name.

Till the time you update the new nameservers and they propagate, you will be able to access your site using a temporary url like http://serverIPaddress/~username. ServerIPaddress = actual IP address of the server.

You will have to specify the temporary URL at the time of the CMS installation. Once you do that, the URL will be mentioned in the configuration file and all the links will work using the same. Once your domain starts resolving from our server, you will then have to change the temporary URL to your domain name in the CMS configuration file.

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

Like you say I can probably work around the change in site root without too many problems once I go live.

One other question I just thought of

I have created the site I am going to host for a club that I am on the committee for.

If I order the hosting on this account is it possible to transfer it to another if I leave the committee and hand over the site in future or am I better creating a new account specifically for this site and just changing the contact details?

    Hi,

Contact details for an account can be changed later upon request. Although, you can update most of the information through your Client Area.

Feel free to post if you have any questions..

So rather than having more than one hosting plan on this account and transferring one to a different account if required - I am better off creating a different account, ordering the hosting on that and then changing the detail if necessary?

Thats right. You can edit your personal details as per your request. You will just need to login to your billing area and make changes in your profile.
