Interesting. But there is no indication in the article as to what status this new OS is in. Alpha, Beta? A year doesn't seem long for a new OS, so I would expect it to be in at least a Beta state.

When Google put out some screenshots, specs etc, I think I will be more inclined to believe they have something concrete they are working on. So far there is nothing to say what it will do and how it will compete with Windows.

The comment about users not having to deal with Viruses, Malware and Security Updates makes me think this could be a web hosted OS. Once you have a file system on the PC, it's only a matter of time (days/weeks) before someone hacks it.

Maybe a hosted OS which will at some time either become a pay-per-use model or advert supported.

Time will tell.

I don't think it be that much competition at first.
Also I wondering what they going to do about drivers for hardware, being this is a new OS.

The other things is, is anyone going to develop games on it, I don't think there any games on Linux thought I could be wrong, I know they have Wine is it that could run PC games.

I would say 98% of games are develop for the PC, being the other 2% for Mac, you don't see mainstream games for Linux being developed.

I do hope there is competition for MS, as it has really been a one way battle for Desktop OS.

Just had another thought. Presumably the EU commission will ensure that the new Chome OS will be made available in the EU without a browser so that users can choose the browser of their choice

Sounds interesting to me There are almost 90% of Windows [Desktops] users worldwide & 70% of IE users..
Anyways, a healthy competition is good, when it comes to application development.. after all MS & Google both are giants in this industry

Google has always been suprising everytime with its new product launch.

The Project Google Chrome Operating System by Google is to develop an operating system for light computers dedicatedly & devotely using the World Wide Web Services via the Internet. Google annouced on July 7, 2009 that the OS is based on Google's Chrome Web Browser and the Linux Kernel. The OS will initially be targeted at netbooks and is set to be released during the second half of 2010. The OS will run on systems with either x86 or ARM processors.

Google has stated that the Google Chrome OS project will be open source by the end of 2009. Although it is based on the Linux kernel, it will use "a new windowing system". Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS.

Not surprising at all, I predicted a Google OS about a decade ago
So how will it work ? When you install trillian will somebody get a "Click here to install Google Chrome Desktop" option if they do a Custom Install ? So if they do express GC Desktop installs ?
When you boot the OS you will get a series of ads to click to get it to boot ? Google own the rights to everything you put on your PC too ? Keep track of your useage for ads ? Man it would be class hehe

I seriously doubt it would be any kind of competition, but you never know. I think youd have to be a few bricks short of a full load to install it ....

Yes, so finally they have announced a launch of OS.. I have a friend who works with Microsoft as a Project Manager for Billing Software that MS provide. I remember, he told me about 4 years back that "Microsoft is waiting for Google to announce an OS launch". I am sure that Microsoft was already prepared for this and the fact today is Google did not have too much success with their Chrome browser, will they be able to do better with the OS..? Or will it be just another Linux based OS..?

I wounder what it will be like for gamers? most games are based on windows or Mac these days. I think it will be one head ache the game writers could do with out let alone all the drivers ppl are guna have to come up with. I'm thinking there guna struggle to get companies to use there OS.

You know, the more I read and think about this Google Chrome the more confused I am about what Google are trying to achieve. Presumably market share, but I just don't see it happening. If we go back to when netbooks were first introduced they were running Linux. Due to public demand Windows XP was put on some of them, and XP is now (according to Gartner) taking over 90% of the netbook market. So if the public didn't want Linux on their netbooks, what makes Google think that a Google branded Linux will make the difference.

I remember back in 1985 the talk was this DOS crap on PCs wont last. Unix will take over and we'll have a proper OS on proper PCs. 1986 - this will be the year of Unix. 1987 - this will be.... Then we got Windows. Then 'Linux is Unix with a graphical interface. And it's free.' What's the Linux share of the desktop market now?

The problem is that so many people are comfortable with Windows, for all its faults, and I just don't see how Google plan to wean everyone off their Windows comfort blankets.

Anyone care to explain what I'm missing?

In future, I think most things will be done over the Internet, and home PCs will revert back to a form of thin-client. For example, all your Office type apps will be run from online web-apps, stored online, and managed online by a few giants like MS and Google. We'll just control them from home via our TVs, media centres, brain implants or whatever, and that's where Chrome OS comes in...

I can see what your saying about an operating "Hub" and you just log on to your "PC" from any PC any were in the world. I know this would give you total freedom. But the security programs theyd need to run for that kind of interface would be masive.
I recon the resorses alone to runs something that big would need it's own power plant.
And it would be a masive target for terrorism. Not to mention you'd naver know whos looking through your files, Hackers, the Goverment, The wife. you just wouldnt know.
