Do I need MySQL if hosting company has it?
Hi All,
I am teaching myself MySQL & PHP but the one thing that isn't clear is this: If my web hosting company offers MySQL, do I still need to download it onto my computer?
Reading the paragraph one way makes it seem like I don't since the hosting company offers it, but then read it another way and it sounds like I do need to in order to build the database. Once built, I can then then transfer it to the hosting company.
Can anyone clear this up?

Hi,
There's no need to have the database server hosted on your local machine itself. You can install MySQL client, ie: a piece of a software which allows you to connect to the remote server which hosts MySQL databases. There are quite few good ones available, eg: Navicat MySQL, MySQL Admin, MySQL Front, etc. using them, you'd be able to connect to the database server remotely & manage the database(s) directly then & there without the need of having a DB server hosted on the local machine itself..

Hi,
Can phpMyAdmin do the same thing as mentioned above??
As it can also be used for the remote management of the MySql.

If you have cPanel control panel with the hosting plan, there is no need to install any MySQL client on your local machine as you will be able to access phpmyadmin from cPanel and manage the database(s)

The websites, web application written in server-side scripting and those APIs, connectivity need MySQL database technology as backend, may require MySQL hosting service.
MySQL+ supported Server-side scripting as PHP, Perl, Ruby, Java, Python are available on our server with Linux hosting. The points you need to consider are your web application, website requirement, server support and your preference.
Please feel free to post if you have any more questions.
