Just search in google "Black Hat SEO", you will get dozens of site/forum and blogs for this. IMO for smart users few techniques are useful though.

I love the hidden content idea. I always put a website hosting description in a hidden div on every page; so will google discount that and ignore that?

Can you go into more details about "tricky redirects". I redirect my main domain to a sub folder - I assume that is fine and I won't be penalised for that?

I don't think you will be penalised for that, even you can do subfolder-redirect to your main domain, just check the path with the addon how you got the redirect/urls to work;

public_html---(htaccess redirect maindomain to folder 'X', mynewdomain to 'Y')
subfolder 'X' (maindomain.com)
subfolder 'Y' (mynewdomain.com)

Tricky re-directs are better known as Doorway pages. These are web pages that are created for spamming the index of a search engine by inserting results for particular phrases with the purpose of sending you to a different page.

The intention is to rank high in the search engines for a particular keyword and then direct the arriving visitors further into the website hosting.

Hope this helps:

Google normally reads your web page from upper left to lower right. And, normally any webpage has a column of navigation links on the left side-bar, and the body of content-text on its right. What Google does here is (not as a rule, but it happens on most occassions), it reads the first column (upper left) and finds a link there, and then it goes and checks that link, before coming to your body (content) column!

To make Google still come to your Content column before going to the nav-links, JUST insert a row on the nav-bar and keep it blank! So, Google will read that column and find a blank --- or a simple text - try putting your best keyword here without a link (in the first row of that left column). Goggle will come to the content column immediately after reading the keyword, and then will find the associated content in the body (content) column!

It will read the entire content column, and then will go to the nav-bar next row.

Try this technique and if you find any good result, then please give a feed back.
