also has anyone been getting a good deal on co.uk domains .. ? i saw some google alerts about co.uk is being offered at $4.69.. thats around 2.89 pounds without VAT..
is there something cheaper out there ?

1&1 have always been a little cheaper than everyone. I tend to use UKReg, which works out around £3.50/year after VAT is applied. I don't like 1&1's web site and domain control panel interface, so I choose to spend that little bit more.

I can see the need for this in some ways because ultimately you'll end up running short on combinations. Still, it would be sensible business to limit it in some way and not just allow people to use whatever they want. Confuse will ensue I'm sure.

but it seems that directi.. or reseller club are offering .CO.UK without VAT.. so its falling cheaper.. will have to check and find out..
