Thread: Backups

    Default Backups

Earlier today, I was having real problems with my VPS running slowly, such that users were getting timeout messages.

I went into the live chat and was (eventually) informed that there were no network issues, but that backups were running which can slow the servers down.

I'm rather unhappy about this. When I signed up, nowhere was I informed that performance would be affected when backups were running, especially during the day.

Can someone please clarify this point: is it common for backups to run during the day? And if so, why have I not been informed of this before now?

    Hello,

We do weekly backups for all our nodes & the backups are done on Saturday & Sunday. The backup nearly takes more than 12 hours to complete as the backup is done for entire node so we have to execute the backup in middle of the day. Backups are taken for clients security as if anythings goes wrong with the vps or with the node, the data can be restored from the backups.

Surely there is a more efficient method of backing up that does not cause websites to time out?

Since I wasn't informed of this process when I signed up, if you do not find a more efficient method (that is, if there is a repeat of this), I shall not renew my hosting when it next comes up for renewal. Because this is, frankly, atrocious.

    Hello,

We have already stopped the current running backup process. We have re-scheduled the backup & it will not run in the day time. Now onwards the backup process will not affect your vps in the peak day time even on sunday.

Feel free to get back to us if you have any more question regarding this issue.

My VPS is running slow again today.

Have backups been moved back to daytime? Or is this another issue?

    Hello Mark Snaith,

Backup is scheduled to run at night. The problem turned out to be caused by backup process got stuck at a particular stage, which caused the load on the server.

We have been able to fix this problem by rearranging the backup sequence on Main Hardware Node. We have just finished doing so and everything should be completely stable again now.

Feel free to get back to us if you have any questions regarding this issue..
    Best Regards,
    Philip S.
