DNS record for hostname?
Hi all,
Just a quick question...
I've recently noticed that I've got a DNS zone for my main domain and also the server hostname. As in...
mysite.co.uk
server.mysite.co.uk
Is this "normal"? Can't you achieve the same result by having an A record on mysite.co.uk that points 'server' to the primary IP address and then just use the DNS zone for mysite.co.uk for all DNS records? (all records for the main site I mean).
I don't think I added the server.mysite.co.uk zone myself so I can only assume it was added automatically by cPanel at some point??
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello,
Add separate DNS entry of your hostname from WHM >> DNS Functions >> Add a DNS Zone pointing to the main IP address of your VPS.
Hostname is the name of your VPS and should point to the Main IP address of the VPS. It will first be set from the main hardware node on which your VPS is hosted.RsyNc.

Hi,
Yes I know how to add a zone. I was just a little confused because i'm sure I used to only have a zone entry for 'mysite.co.uk' and not 'server.mysite.co.uk'.
I do have other zones listed for other domains that I host on a shared IP address (not the primary vps IP) but my example mysite.co.uk is the main domain for the vps and obviously 'server' in the vps hostname.
If I should have the server.mysite.co.uk zone then that's fine. I just wondered why it suddely appeared and also whether it really needed to be there because I would imagine that as long as I had an A record entry for 'server' on the mysite.co.uk zone, it wouldn't require a seperate zone??

Hi,
You can either have a separate Zone file for server.yourdomain.com and yourdomain.com or you can add A record for server in zone file of yourdomain.com.
We prefer to add A records for the subdomains and hostname within the zone file of main domain, as it helps you to keep limited zone files on the server.UK Web Hosting || Business Hosting || eUKhost Knowledgebase

Hi,
Yes that's exactly what I thought. I don't even know how the server.maindomain.co.uk zone got added unless one of your admins added it for some reason. I'll just delete it if it doesn't need to be there. I've just taken two screenshots of the two zones. Can someone just check these two zones and make sure that I'm fine to delete the hostname.maindomain version?...

I have got the A record in the main zone for the hostname so I guess there's no reason to keep this extra zone? It would help to keep things tidy.

Hello Chris,
I have checked both screen shots, and the A record for the hostname exist in the zone of your main domain. So, it is safe for you to delete the dns zone of the hostname.RsyNc.

Yep, that's what I thought. God only knows how that zone got there in the first place!

Thanks for everyone's help on this!

Occasionally cPanel and WHM do odd things like that. When something like subdomains not resolving correctly first thing I do is check to see if a second conflicting entry has been created in the DNS.
