    Default Reverse DNS, Email Issues.

My clients have reported issues sending email to some mailboxes including AOL. Upon investigating the mail log I have found that the issue is because my VPS has no reverse dns.
I have now added a master zone file to BIND with a reverse record but when I lookup the IP address it still states that there is no reverse dns.
I am using virtualmin GPL. I would be very grateful for any help. Sean.

    Hi,

Reverse dns record need to be added on our dns server. Could you please provide us domain name you want to set in rdns record? We will set rdns record for your VPS IP address.

    Sean,

I have added rdns record for your VPS IP address pointing to the domain name branaghcomputers.com. It is working now.

Would it be possible to add the rdns record for the second IP address on my VPS pointing to the same domain? I may use this IP address in the future.

    Hello,

You must have a forward dns set to a domain which is pointing to secondary IP.

If we add the rdns record for the secondary IP address pointing to the same domain it will not work properly.

Please provide us the domain name which is pointing to you secondary ip address so that we will set rdns record.

I don't currently have a domain pointing at that address. I assumed you could use the same one. In future when I use the address I will contact you with the relevant domain. Thankyou.

FAO ajbird. At least next time I will know what the problem is as opposed to trawling through the maill log to find the bounced emails my clients are complaining about.

    Hi Sean,

A PTR record is the reverse of an A record. That is, it maps an IP address to a hostname, rather than vice versa.

Given an IP address of the form a.b.c.d, the usual form for a PTR record is this: d.c.b.a.in-addr.arpa. PTR host.name.

Most of the mail servers check whether there is a rDNS set for the IP from where the email is coming from & if there is no rDNS record set, it rejects the email considering it as spam. This is the reason why most of the people now a days set rDNS record for the main IP of the server (generally to the hostname of the server) as by default emails are routed out from the main IP of the server.

We can have the IP address mapped to the domain through setting up an rDNS [PTR] record, but it would be of no use for the email services as of now unless the domain points to that particular IP address. Please let us which other IP address needs to be mapped to branaghcomputers.com..

As you have said, even if I use the second IP on my server in the future the email will still be sent through the main IP so I now realize I have no need for rdns records for the second IP.
