    Default ffmpeg availability?

    Hi,

I'm working on an web site that will eventually need to do some audio and video format conversions, extract thumbnails and preview images from video, etc.

From searching the web I found that the best tool for this on Linux seems to be a command line tool called ffmpeg.

I don't think it is installed on islander because I ran a cron job "ffmpeg -version" and got the reply that it didn't exist.

Is ffmpeg something that you could install on a reseller machine? or would I have to move up to a vps account? I'm not quite ready for it yet, but it would be nice to know what the options are for future reference.

    My thanks for any info.

    Hi Noel,

We dont have FFMPEG plugin/software installed on any of our Linux Shared/Reseller servers due to it's little market demand & huge resource utilisation during execution. We've no plans for installing it on our servers in the future, hence any VPS/SD package would be recommend for using such applications..

It is indeed possible to install FFMpeg on a Windows VPS. Although, our customers generally prefer Linux due to the ease of installation on linux servers.

In case you need any assistance installing FFmpeg, do let us know

Well, if you are looking forward to run a media site on the Windows VPS, I don't think you would need a FFMPEG plugin or any other application as Windows media player should do the job for you, however, I am not sure about it. I hope someone here confirms about it.

If one selects a Windows VPS for hosting a media site, FFMPEG plugin or any other application isn't required as Windows Media Player is fine for hosting a media site on the Windows VPSs. Windows Media Service can also be used for streaming, however, a Windows dedicated server is recommended for streaming as Windows VPSs aren't offered with enough resources for streaming.

Right. Some of the hosting companies do not allow streaming with the VPSs as this affects the entire node and the performance of other VPSs on the same node is affected.

You can use FFmpeg with some Shared hosting providers (e.g. mine ), as long as traffic/resource usage is fairly low. If a lot of videos are being uploaded and your site has quite a lot of traffic, it would be best to use a VPS/Dedicated server instead.

The resources required to run multimedia sites are often too much than what are offered with the shared hosting plans and that's the reason shared hosting plans do not meet the requirements of multimedia sites. Due to this reason, a VPS or a Dedicated server is always recommended when it comes to multimedia sites as they are offered with necessary resources and are also provided with root administrator access which may be required if some applications are to be installed.
