    Unhappy Permission Issues

    Hi,

    My first eukhost post! I'm an ASP.NET web developer and I've been using eukhost for about 3 months now. On the whole, I feel they provide an great service and excellent value for money. However over the past 3 months, the permissions for my domains have "mysteriously" been revoked getting on for a dozen times. I've been told this can occur for example due to changing your main Plesk password for a domain but to be honest, I can't think of any good reason why this should ever occur. Add to the fact that only once have I done this, my permission issues seem to be happening randomly and without warning!

    The symptoms include things like being unable to access Web Directories or File Manager from within Plesk, unable to FTP content through to, at worst, my websites being completely inaccessible (HTTP Error 401.3 Unauthorized).

    This is a MAJOR issue for me - clearly my websites being taken down due to this is entirely unacceptable.

    Has anyone else had any issues like this or know what can be done to resolve it? eukhost can usually resolve the issue fairly quickly but don't seem interested in what's causing it?

    Hello Andy,

    The permissions get reset if either of these happen from the Plesk control panel:

    1. Reset main FTP user's password from Setup.
    2. Edit main FTP username from Setup.
    3. Enable/Disable FP extensions from Setup.
    4. Change PHP or ASP .NET versions from Setup.
    5. Add/remove additional script languages from Setup.
    6. Enable/disable dedicated Pool to a domain from Setup.
    7. Reset additional FTP user's password from FTP manager.
    8. Edit additional FTP username from FTP manager.
    9. Plesk Control panel has been upgraded or repaired.

    I can assure that Plesk has not been upgraded or repaired on the server. Editing any options in Setup menu runs a utility to reassign permission on the domain according to the updated data. And by default Plesk does not allow web users to have write permissions.

    We have set appropriate permission for the domain andyweekes.com as well as portisheadurc.co.uk. The problem has been resolved now.

    Hi Alfred,

    I'm not suggesting that Plesk be rolled back to a previous version - I guess you've just read the other thread on this subject.

    I'm not making the kind of changes you suggest in your reply and my permissions issues are not consistent - one domain was completely screwed whilst the other only had FTP permission issues.

    Regardless of whether or not Plesk decides to reset permissions the issue is this - permissions are not being reset, they are being revoked. Being reset to what they were (including my access) would be acceptable (although not ideal if it overrides permissions to folders/files I've specifically applied) but revoking my permissions is entirely unacceptable, particularly when it makes my websites inaccessible.

    This issue is clearly being felt by others and is one that will continue to cause issues until it is investigated and resolved.

    Dear Andy,

    We have gone through the support instance you have opened for this issue, It seems strange that even though you have not made changes in Plesk, the permissions are removed. We have escalated this issue to the control panel vendor, we will update you as soon as we get an update from them on this issue.

    I must admit, I too seem to spend most of my time onto support getting permissions reset. As though if something in one domain is changed it seems theat all my other domains are affected.

    Hi everyone,

    I too am having the same problem with access permissions being mysteriously revoked for no apparent reason. This has happened at least six times now. The live chat support is great and they simply reset my permissions and all works again for a while. I am now told there is an issue with Plesk that is causing this problem. Please get this sorted asap eukhosts.

    Clearly this issue is still ongoing. I've now moved away from shared hosting and have my own VPS (this in itself has a number of drawbacks!) but at least this way, I am able to resolve these issues myself and restore the permissions I require.

    Assuming this issue lies with Plesk, then I really can't understand how they can sell the product and why anyone would choose to continue using it - a user makes a certain type of change in Plesk and "some Plesk code" resets permissions - this in itself is pretty horrific but on many occasions I've seen the folders left in a very bare state, without even the Plesk IUSER having read access (hence why sites may sometimes be completely unavailable). This is beyond belief.

    If anyone knows of any alternatives to Plesk (that provide the same functionality and actually work) please post them here!

    eUKhost - dont' just fob us off with "the problem lies with the vendor" - find an alternative product or a workaround!

    We do have started providing DotNetPanel as an alternative to Plesk control panel after having these much issues with the latter one.
    Please get in touch with our Sales/Billing to get your package/account moved over to the DNP server.

    We're aware of the fact that Plesk control panel has issues which are more than permissions & the makers of the same are aware of this fact as well.     Hi Rock. Thanks for your input. I agree with your advise but in my instance, I was specifically advised to continue using Plesk. So on one hand, a customer is advised to use Plesk and on the other, not to as it doesn't work and consumes resources...

    Let's hope we see some progress in this area. Given the fact that I'm set up, stable and happy with my current situation (and that I can resolve these permission issues myself when they arise!) I'm certainly not inclined to jump out of the frying pan and into the fire by using another product or trying to do away with Plesk and do everything manually...

    There is nothing to implement it on the server, it is just that any permissions that has been given to httpdocs folder through RDP will get removed. Therefore one should use Filemanager option to give permissions so thet they get saved in the .Security file and Plesk knows that these specific folders need write permissions.

    Unfortunately plesk has no option to give write permissions on httpdocs folder.
